Short answer

Which Matter smart lights are worth buying?

Best overall: the Nanoleaf Essentials A19 (CSA certificate CSA2430CMAT43455-24), a Thread bulb, so it needs a Thread border router as well as your Matter controller. For Wi-Fi with no border router, pick the Tapo L535E Multicolor A19 (color), the Linkind 4-pack (tunable white), the Sengled A19 (full color, sold singly), the Govee LED Strip Light 2 (strip) or the LIFX Color A19 (color, no brand hub).

Looking for a Matter smart bulb? 5 of these 6 picks are bulbs: on Thread, the Nanoleaf Essentials A19 Smart Bulb; on Wi-Fi, the Linkind Matter Smart Light Bulbs (4-Pack), Tapo L535E Multicolor A19, Sengled Matter LED Smart Bulb (A19) and LIFX Color A19. A Thread bulb also needs a Thread border router; a Wi-Fi bulb joins your Wi-Fi network.

Brands: the most Matter lights sold in the US with a store link come from Govee (119), LIFX (33), Linkind (32), WiZ (22) and Nanoleaf (16); lights that use Thread come from IKEA (11), Philips Hue (10), Nanoleaf (3) and 3 more brands. A CSA-certified Matter light can work with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings when the app supports its device type, so compare lights by what differs: the network (a Thread light also needs a Thread border router), color or tunable white, a CSA certificate for the exact model, and the platforms its maker names.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Matter smart lights need a hub?
It depends on your platform and on the bulb’s network. Google Home needs a Matter-enabled hub on your home network, such as a Nest speaker, a Nest Hub or a Google TV Streamer (4K). Apple says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, though it recommends one, and the CSA says control from away needs an internet-connected controller, such as one built into a smart speaker or hub, in the home. Wi-Fi bulbs such as the Linkind and LIFX picks connect over your home Wi-Fi. Thread bulbs such as the Nanoleaf pick also need a Thread border router; with Apple, an iPhone 15 Pro or later on iOS 18 can control them at home on its own, but automations and control from away need a Thread-enabled home hub or border router. Thread-enabled hubs include HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, or the 3rd generation Wi-Fi + Ethernet model) from Apple; Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer (4K) from Google; and Echo models such as the Echo (4th Gen) and Echo Hub from Amazon.
What is the difference between Thread and Wi-Fi smart bulbs?
Thread bulbs join a low-power wireless mesh network; Wi-Fi bulbs connect over your home Wi-Fi. The Thread Group calls Thread a low-power and low-latency wireless mesh networking protocol. Google says devices that use Thread communicate faster than devices that use Wi-Fi, that each Thread device you add builds a mesh that extends through your home and reroutes signals if one device goes down, and that the mesh can reach spots Wi-Fi struggles to reach. Google’s energy point is about battery-powered devices, so it does not apply to bulbs. Wi-Fi bulbs need no Thread border router; each one joins your Wi-Fi network as its own device. We have not measured either kind ourselves.
Can I mix Matter lights from different brands?
Yes. The CSA says Matter devices from multiple brands work natively together, and its multi-admin feature lets you connect a Matter device to several platforms, apps or other control points. Apple’s Home app lists lights among the Matter accessory types it supports, and Philips Hue says all Hue products work with Matter when connected through a Hue Bridge. Google notes that platforms add support for each Matter device type at different times, so check the platforms each product page lists.
How many Matter smart lights can I have?
For Thread, the Thread Group says you can connect more than 250 devices into one low-power wireless mesh network. The official pages we read give no limit for Matter itself or for Matter over Wi-Fi; each Wi-Fi bulb joins your Wi-Fi network, so check your router maker’s stated device limit.
Which smart light brands work with Matter, and with which ecosystems?
MatterCatalog lists 453 Matter lights sold in the US from 60 brands. 350 of them, from 48 brands, have a verified US store link, and 302 of those (86%) have a CSA record on file. The brands with the most lights with a store link are Govee (119), LIFX (33), Linkind (32), WiZ (22) and Nanoleaf (16). Brands with Thread lights: IKEA (11), Philips Hue (10), Nanoleaf (3), Caveman (1), ThirdReality (1) and Umbra (1).
Are Matter smart lights more expensive than non-Matter lights?
We have not compared the prices of Matter and non-Matter lights, so this page makes no claim either way. Several picks here come in multi-packs (the Linkind bulbs as a 4-pack, the Tapo L535E as an Amazon 2-pack and the Nanoleaf Essentials A19 as a 3-pack at Nanoleaf’s store), so compare the per-bulb price at the retailer.
