Do IKEA Matter devices use Thread or Wi-Fi?
By Matter network, 32 use Thread and 1 does not name a single network in its record. Thread devices need a Thread border router.
Does IKEA KAJPLATS work with a Philips Hue Bridge?
Philips Hue’s pages don’t say so, and its specifications point the other way. All 20 KAJPLATS bulbs we list are Matter-over-Thread lights: each has a CSA Matter certificate on file and its record names Thread, so they join Matter through a Thread border router. Philips Hue lists the Hue Bridge’s communication protocols as Bluetooth and Zigbee, not Thread, and says Hue products work with Matter when connected through the Hue Bridge. To use KAJPLATS and Hue lights together, add both to the same Matter platform, such as Apple Home, Google Home or SmartThings: KAJPLATS through a Thread border router, Hue lights through the Hue Bridge.Sources:philips-hue.com (Philips Hue, Hue Bridge US product page, specifications), read Oct 16, 2026: “Communication protocol Bluetooth, Zigbee”philips-hue.com (Philips Hue, Philips Hue and Matter), read Oct 16, 2026: “All Philips Hue products — including both new and existing ones — will work with Matter if connected via Hue Bridge.”
Do I need the IKEA DIRIGERA hub for IKEA Matter devices?
Not if your smart home platform already has a Thread border router. 32 of the 33 IKEA products we list use Thread. Apple says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as the Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router; SmartThings says Thread devices need a Matter controller that includes a Thread border router. DIRIGERA can be that device: IKEA says it includes Thread border router functionality, and that it acts as a Matter bridge so older IKEA Zigbee devices keep working.Sources:support.apple.com (Apple, Pair and manage your Matter accessories), read Oct 16, 2026: “Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router.”support.smartthings.com (SmartThings, SmartThings x Matter Integration), read Oct 16, 2026: “To connect devices built on Thread, you will need a Matter controller that includes a Thread Border Router.”ikea.com (IKEA on DIRIGERA, Thread), read Oct 1, 2026: “DIRIGERA includes Thread Border Router functionality to support them.”ikea.com (IKEA on DIRIGERA, Matter bridge), read Oct 1, 2026: “DIRIGERA acts as a Matter Bridge so older Zigbee‑based devices continue to work in your smart home.”
Which hubs and Thread border routers work with IKEA Matter devices?
A Thread border router that your Matter platform can use. Apple names the Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini. Google names the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) and Google TV Streamer (4K) as hubs for Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. SmartThings says Thread devices need a Matter controller that includes a Thread border router, names the SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as its Matter controllers, and says its 2015 Hub has no Thread router. Amazon’s developer documentation lists a built-in Thread border router in the Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen) and Echo Show 21. IKEA says its DIRIGERA hub includes Thread border router functionality. The Philips Hue Bridge is not on these lists: Hue lists its protocols as Bluetooth and Zigbee.Sources:support.apple.com (Apple, Pair and manage your Matter accessories), read Oct 16, 2026: “Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router.”support.google.com (Google, Google Home Help, Matter hubs for Google Home), read Oct 16, 2026: “The following hubs support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread:”support.smartthings.com (SmartThings, SmartThings x Matter Integration), read Oct 16, 2026: “To connect devices built on Thread, you will need a Matter controller that includes a Thread Border Router.”support.smartthings.com (SmartThings, SmartThings x Matter Integration), read Oct 16, 2026: “At the time of posting this article, Samsung Matter controllers include the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub .”support.smartthings.com (SmartThings, SmartThings x Matter Integration), read Oct 16, 2026: “The SmartThings 2015 Hub (STH-ETH & others ) is a Matter controller that supports Matter devices using WiFi/LAN connections but does not contain a Thread router.”developer.amazon.com (Amazon developer documentation, smart home Thread support (on file)), checked Oct 1, 2026ikea.com (IKEA on DIRIGERA, Thread), read Oct 1, 2026: “DIRIGERA includes Thread Border Router functionality to support them.”philips-hue.com (Philips Hue, Hue Bridge US product page, specifications), read Oct 16, 2026: “Communication protocol Bluetooth, Zigbee”
Do IKEA Matter devices work with Apple Home, Google Home and SmartThings?
Yes, as Matter devices, where the platform supports the device type. All 33 IKEA products we list have a CSA Matter certificate on file. Apple says any app that supports Matter can pair Matter accessories, and its Home app’s list of supported types includes lights, outlets, bridges, and motion, contact, temperature and humidity sensors; water leak sensors, such as KLIPPBOK, are not on that list. SmartThings says a device with the Matter badge connects to any supported Matter controller in its app. Google says you need a Matter-enabled hub set up before you add Matter devices to Google Home. IKEA’s Thread devices also need a Thread border router.Sources:support.apple.com (Apple, Pair and manage your Matter accessories), read Oct 16, 2026: “You can pair Matter accessories to your iPhone or iPad using any app that supports the Matter smart home standard.”support.apple.com (Apple, Pair and manage your Matter accessories), read Oct 16, 2026: “The Home app currently supports these types of Matter accessories: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors (motion, ambient light, contact, temperature, and humidity).”support.smartthings.com (SmartThings, SmartThings x Matter Integration), read Oct 16, 2026: “As long as the device has the Matter badge on it, you will be able to connect it to any supported Matter Controller in the SmartThings app.”support.google.com (Google, Google Home Help, Matter hubs for Google Home), read Oct 16, 2026: “Before you can add Matter-enabled devices to Google Home, you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your home wireless network”
Are IKEA Matter devices sold in the US?
21 of the 33 IKEA Matter products we list have a verified IKEA US store link, from the ALPSTUGA, BILRESA, DIRIGERA, GRILLPLATS, KAJPLATS, KLIPPBOK, MYGGBETT, MYGGSPRAY, TIMMERFLOTTE, TOFSMYGGA and VARMBLIXT lines. The US KAJPLATS bulbs have E26, E12 and GU10 bases. 12 listings are versions sold outside the US, including the E27 and E14 KAJPLATS bulbs; where we know the US version, the list above names it.
How do I add IKEA Matter devices?
To add a Matter device from IKEA, power it on, open your smart home app (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant), choose to add a Matter device, and scan the device’s Matter QR code or enter its setup code. Each platform has its own requirements, such as a hub or a compatible speaker; the platform guides below list them. 32 of the 33 IKEA products we list use Thread, so they also need a Thread border router on your network. If you use the IKEA DIRIGERA hub, IKEA’s Matter bridge, add the hub itself to your Matter app; the bridge then brings the devices connected to it into Matter. A device already set up in another app can join a second one with a pairing code from the first app (Matter multi-admin).

Counts are the IKEA listings this page shows, from MatterCatalog's records: CSA certificates on file, the Matter network each record names and the stores with a verified US link. Hubs come from our reviewed lists of Matter bridges and Thread border routers, each backed by the maker's own words. Hub, Hue Bridge and platform answers quote the official Philips Hue, Apple, Google, SmartThings and IKEA pages named under each answer, with the date we read them. Certificate IDs and dates come from each record (a date marked * is the ledger model’s first certification day). Ledger counts are the certified models of the ledger vendors matched to this brand. A platform is named only where the maker’s own page names it.
