If you use Apple Home
Check your HomePod or Apple TV first.
HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) provide home hub and Thread border-router roles. A compatible iPhone or iPad, current software, Wi-Fi and power are part of setup.
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and the 3rd-generation Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128 GB model include Thread. The 3rd-generation Wi-Fi-only 64 GB model does not.
Local control is different from an always-on home hub: iOS 18 or later supports local Matter control on iPhone. Thread-enabled iPhones have qualified local pairing support, sometimes requiring accessory firmware updates. Remote access, sharing and automations need an Apple home hub.
If you use Amazon Alexa
The Echo generation matters.
Echo (4th generation) and Echo Show 8 (3rd generation, 2023 release) provide Matter controller and Thread border-router roles. Set up the compatible device in the Alexa app, then add supported Matter accessories.
Check Amazon’s separate lists for controller support and built-in Thread. An Echo’s Matter support alone does not establish its Thread role. Newer models, including Echo Dot Max (2025), also appear in the Thread list.
Keep the 2023 Show 8 distinct from the 2025 release. Supported accessory categories and features depend on Amazon’s current software and documentation.
If you use Google Home
A display, router or streamer may be enough.
Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer (4K) support Matter and built-in Thread. Add your supported hub to Google Home, keep it updated and enable IPv6 on your home network.
Nest Audio and Nest Mini are listed for Matter over Wi-Fi. Google also lists Google Home Speaker (2026) for Thread; that is a separate model, not a retail offer verified by this guide.

A Matter controller manages accessories in your platform. A Thread border router connects Thread to your home network. A bridge shares supported attached devices. Speaker or display describes the device’s form—not its network role.

Before adding another controller
Do I need a smart speaker to use Matter?
A speaker is one possible home for a Matter controller. A compatible display, router or dedicated hub may already provide the role you need. Start with your chosen platform and existing hardware before buying another device.
Is a Matter controller the same as a Thread border router?
A controller adds and manages devices in a platform. A Thread border router connects Thread accessories to your home IP network. A Matter bridge shares supported attached accessories. These are separate roles, even when one device performs more than one.
Which Matter controller is best for Apple Home?
First check what you own. HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation) and specific Apple TV 4K models can provide home hub and Thread roles. iOS 18 or later also permits qualified local iPhone control, but a home hub is needed for remote access, sharing and automations.
Can Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home control the same Matter devices?
Matter multi-admin can share a supported accessory across platforms. Follow the accessory and platform sharing instructions; supported device types and features can differ. A controller does not become a controller for every other platform simply because it supports Matter.
Are these seven models the complete market or current buying recommendations?
No. They are documentation-reviewed setup references, including hardware readers may already own. Newer models and other controllers exist. One exact US Echo (4th generation) Charcoal offer is identified separately. The other six remain informational references; current prices, condition and availability must be checked at the retailer.
