Matter device unavailable in Home Assistant: what to check
Updated October 28, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.
Short answer
Why does my Matter device show unavailable in Home Assistant?
Home Assistant’s own docs give one cause for devices that fail to commission or become unavailable at random: Matter relies on IPv6 and mDNS multicast traffic moving freely on your network, and it does not mix well with VLANs, multicast filtering or faulty IGMP snooping. Put Wi-Fi Matter devices on the same VLAN as Home Assistant, make sure Thread devices belong to a Thread network with a border router on that LAN, and turn off router settings that “optimize” multicast. The 5 quick checks below cover the rest.(Home Assistant: Matter)
As of October 28, 2026, 145 of the Matter products in our catalog that are certified for the exact model and sold in the US with a store link use Thread and 490 use Wi-Fi, so most of them fall in one of the two groups below.(our catalog)
As of . Steps are paraphrased from the platforms’ and makers’ own help pages, linked on the guide; we have not tested them ourselves. Sources: Home Assistant: Matter; our catalog; Apple: not responding; Home Assistant: Thread.
Quick checks, in order
- Home Assistant OS with the Home Assistant Matter Server app is the supported way to use Matter, and Thread-based devices need Home Assistant OS version 10 or above. Running the Matter Server as a standalone Docker container is unsupported.(Home Assistant: Matter)
- IPv6 must be on for Home Assistant: in Settings, System, Network set IPv6 to Automatic (or static, if your network needs it). You do not need IPv6 internet or a DHCPv6 server, but IPv6 multicast must reach the Home Assistant host.(Home Assistant: Matter)
- Keep the topology simple and flat. A router or access-point setting that optimizes multicast traffic can harm discovery from Matter devices.(Home Assistant: Matter)
- Power-cycle the network side: Apple suggests unplugging third-party hubs and bridges and plugging them back in, and for third-party Thread devices cutting power for 5 minutes, reconnecting, and waiting 10 minutes for the Thread network to settle.(Apple: not responding)
- Download diagnostics before you ask for help: Settings, Devices & services, the Matter integration, then the three dots and Download diagnostics (integration level), or open the device and use its three dots (device level).(Home Assistant: Matter)

If the unavailable device uses Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi Matter devices should be on the same VLAN as Home Assistant, and on the 2.4 GHz network where you want to run them; the phone you use to add them must be on that same 2.4 GHz network.(Home Assistant: Matter)
Checking network connectivity stuck on Android? Meet the Android requirements (8.1 minimum, 12 or higher recommended, a regular Google-account setup and up-to-date Google Play Services).(Home Assistant: Matter)
If the unavailable device uses Thread
A Thread device needs a Thread network with at least one border router on your LAN near it. Home Assistant lists the Nest Hub (2nd gen), the HomePod mini and its own Connect ZBT-2 with the OpenThread Border Router app as examples. Use the Thread integration to look at your Thread networks.(Home Assistant: Matter; Home Assistant: Thread)
Devices cannot roam between Thread networks, so a device that joined one Thread network stays on it; check that border router is on and reachable. Android: restart the phone and the Thread border router if a Thread device will not connect.(Home Assistant: Thread; Android: Thread)
Apple border routers and updates: Home Assistant cannot send firmware updates to a Matter-over-Thread device when the only border router is Apple’s (error “Target node did not process the update file”). Add another border router, such as Home Assistant itself, or power down all Apple border routers for at least 30 minutes and retry the update. Google lists these hubs as Thread border routers: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E), Google TV Streamer (4K).(Home Assistant: Matter; Google: Thread)

Error messages from Home Assistant’s docs
| What you see | What Home Assistant says to do |
|---|---|
| “Matter is currently unavailable” (Android) | The Matter modules may not have downloaded yet: wait up to 24 hours for Google Play Services, check the requirements, use the full Play Store app and update Google Play Services.(Home Assistant: Matter) |
| “You need to use the Home Assistant Companion app” | Adding a Matter device only works in the Companion app on a phone or tablet, not in a browser, and not on a Mac.(Home Assistant: Matter) |
| “This device requires a border router” | A Thread device needs a Thread border router near it and a phone that knows the Thread network’s credentials; set up a border router and sync the credentials to your phone.(Home Assistant: Matter) |
| “Target node did not process the update file” | Updates from Home Assistant do not work when an Apple Thread border router is the only one: add another border router or power down the Apple ones for at least 30 minutes.(Home Assistant: Matter) |
| Commissioning fails, discovery fails, or devices drop out at random | IPv6 and mDNS multicast must flow freely; avoid VLANs, multicast filtering and faulty IGMP snooping, and keep Wi-Fi Matter devices on the same VLAN as Home Assistant.(Home Assistant: Matter) |
Notes from makers whose devices we list
| Maker | What the maker says that applies here |
|---|---|
| TP-Link Tapo and Kasa | Keep the Matter controller and the devices on the same local network, not a guest, IoT or other VLAN; setup is open for 15 minutes after power-on; a device already in another app needs a new setup code.(TP-Link: troubleshooting) |
| Govee | An IPv6 network is required; if you switch networks in the Govee Home app, the device’s Matter function is disabled and you must reset it and reconnect it in the Matter app.(Govee: Matter FAQ) |
| Leviton Decora Smart | Matter needs IPv6; Orbi routers ship with it off. Turn it on, factory reset one device and add it again.(Leviton: Orbi routers) |
When to stop and ask for help
If the device stays unavailable after the network checks, ask in the places Home Assistant points to: it asks you to report issues with the diagnostics file attached, and says to report compatibility issues you find. For a device-specific fault (it will not reset, or setup fails in every app), contact the device’s maker; Google says the same when setup cannot be completed in the manufacturer’s app.(Home Assistant: Matter; Google: Matter devices)

Frequently asked questions
Why do my Matter devices keep going unavailable in Home Assistant?
Home Assistant’s docs say Matter relies on IPv6 and mDNS multicast traffic moving freely, and may not work well with VLANs, multicast filtering or faulty IGMP snooping. Keep Wi-Fi Matter devices on the same VLAN as Home Assistant and keep the network simple.
Do I need IPv6 for Matter in Home Assistant?
Local IPv6 multicast has to reach the Home Assistant host. You do not need IPv6 internet or a DHCPv6 server, and in Settings, System, Network IPv6 should be set to Automatic or static.
Can I run the Matter Server in a plain Docker container?
Home Assistant calls Home Assistant OS with the Matter Server app the supported path and the standalone Docker container unsupported, though it documents the host and networking requirements.
Why can’t Home Assistant update my Matter over Thread device?
Home Assistant says updates are not supported with an Apple Thread border router as the only one. Add another border router or power down the Apple ones for at least 30 minutes and retry.
