About Samsung SmartThings and Matter

Samsung SmartThings has long supported smart home devices from many brands. The SmartThings Hub (v3) and SmartThings Station support Matter, acting as both controllers and Thread Border Routers. SmartThings also describes bridging, which can expose some existing Zigbee and Z-Wave devices as Matter devices to other platforms; check SmartThings' current documentation for your hub. Some Samsung smart TVs, refrigerators, and other appliances with a SmartThings hub built in can also serve as Matter controllers.

You need a Matter controller for Samsung SmartThings, which is often a speaker, display or hub you already own. SmartThings needs a SmartThings hub or another Matter controller; Samsung’s help page names the SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub, and for a Thread device the controller needs a Thread border router (or a border router from another brand).

Can I use the same Matter device with Samsung SmartThings and another app?

Set the device up in the first app, then use that app to create a new pairing code (or QR code) for it, and enter that code in the second app as you would add a new device. The code printed on the device works only for the first app. You can do this because Matter lets one device join several controllers; check that each app has its own hub.
