How to reset LIFX Matter devices

Updated October 28, 2026 · Steps paraphrased from each platform's or maker's own help pages, linked beside each step. We have not tested these steps ourselves.

Short answer

How do I reset LIFX Matter devices?

To reset a LIFX bulb, make sure it is on, then turn it off and on at the power source 5 times, slowly and evenly. On the final power-on it shows its reset pattern and enters setup mode, and you can add it again with its Matter code. Lightstrips with a controller can also use the controller button; LIFX switches reset by a button-hold that depends on their firmware.(LIFX: reset)

As of October 28, 2026, our catalog lists 33 LIFX products with a CSA Matter certificate for the exact model and a verified US store link (0 use Thread, 20 use Wi-Fi). 14 of them fall under a reset method on this page; each row below says which.(our catalog)

As of . Steps are paraphrased from the platforms’ and makers’ own help pages, linked on the guide; we have not tested them ourselves. Sources: LIFX: reset; our catalog; TP-Link: setup tips; Home Assistant: Matter.

Before you reset a LIFX device

  1. Find the Matter setup code (printed on the device or its box, or in the maker’s app) and keep a photo of it: after a reset it is the way back in.(TP-Link: setup tips; Home Assistant: Matter)
  2. Remove the device from the apps that hold it. On an iPhone, Settings, General, Matter Accessories lists what is paired and lets you remove it; in Google Home, open the device’s settings and remove it. Google adds that a device you no longer use should be factory reset after you remove it.(Apple: Matter accessories; Google: Matter devices)
  3. Then reset it with the maker’s steps on this page, and add it again as a new device.(Google: Matter devices)

Reset a LIFX bulb (5 power cycles)

  1. Make sure the light is turned on.(LIFX: reset)
  2. Turn it off and on at the power source five times, slowly and at consistent intervals.(LIFX: reset)
  3. On the last power-on it shows its reset pattern and enters setup mode. LIFX Colour products flash red, green and blue and settle on white; the Mini Day & Dusk cycles through warm, mixed and cool white; the Mini White dims, rises to medium and flashes brightly.(LIFX: reset)
  4. No pattern? LIFX says to repeat the sequence slightly more slowly.(LIFX: reset)

Reset a lightstrip with a controller

  1. Make sure the controller has power.(LIFX: reset)
  2. Press and hold the small controller button for 10 to 15 seconds, and release it when the connected sections start flashing or cycling through colours. The strip re-enters setup mode. LIFX adds that the same five-power-cycle method as a bulb also works.(LIFX: reset)

Reset a LIFX Switch (depends on firmware)

The steps depend on the firmware shown in the LIFX app. LIFX’s page covers the 2-button and 4-button Switches; for the LIFX Smart Dimmer it points you to the instructions in the LIFX app or the product’s own support page.(LIFX: reset)

  1. Matter firmware 4.100 and later: the Switch uses a timed button-hold sequence to reboot, factory reset or cancel a reset, with no flashing-green setup mode. LIFX keeps the full sequence on a separate page, “Troubleshooting LIFX Switch: Matter Firmware 4.100 and Later”.(LIFX: reset)
  2. Older non-Matter firmware: press and hold all buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds, and release when the status LED flashes green and you feel a haptic pulse. The Switch enters setup mode.(LIFX: reset)
  3. Do not repeat a Switch reset until you know which firmware process applies.(LIFX: reset)

When a LIFX reset is the fix

LIFX lists these reasons: you changed your Wi-Fi network name, password or router; the light was set up in another place; you are troubleshooting setup or connection; the light does not show in the LIFX app; you are passing it on; or you need to remove its stored configuration.(LIFX: reset)

Add the LIFX light again over Matter

  1. Plug in the light and power it on. Open the LIFX app on an iPhone or iPad, tap the plus icon, then New Product, then New Light.(LIFX: Matter on iOS)
  2. Tap Scan QR Code and scan the code printed on the product or inside the manual. If the code will not scan, type the 11-digit Matter code instead. Then add the light to Home and choose a room and a name.(LIFX: Matter on iOS)
  3. Or add it straight from the Apple Home app: tap the plus, Add Accessory, and scan the Matter pairing code on the packaging or the device. LIFX recommends iOS 18, or a HomePod or Apple TV as home hub.(LIFX: Apple Home)
  4. To use the light in a second app, open Light Settings in the LIFX app and share it with another service; each time, a new pairing code is made from an app the light is already in.(LIFX: share)

When to stop and contact LIFX support

If the light will not reset, LIFX says to check that it is not on a hardware dimmer or another smart switch, test it on another outlet or circuit, and for a modular product try one section at a time; for a Switch hold all buttons together and use the process for its installed firmware.(LIFX: reset)

If it still will not reset or become available for setup, contact LIFX Support and include the product model, the firmware version and what the LEDs did during the reset.(LIFX: reset)

If the app cannot add the device after a reset

Apple’s checklist for a device the Home app cannot add: make sure the accessory is on and close to the router, unplug third-party bridges and home hubs and plug them back in, and if the app says the accessory is already added or was used in another home, reset it by its maker’s steps. If you cannot finish setup in LIFX’s app, Google says to contact the device manufacturer.(Apple: if you can’t add; Google: Matter devices)

Frequently asked questions

How do I factory reset a LIFX Matter bulb?

Make sure the bulb is on, then turn it off and on at the power source five times, slowly and at even intervals. On the last power-on it shows its reset pattern and enters setup mode, per LIFX’s support page.

Do I need to reset a LIFX light after changing my Wi-Fi router?

LIFX lists changing the Wi-Fi network name, password or router among the reasons to hardware reset a light so it can be set up again.

How do I reset a LIFX Switch?

It depends on the firmware shown in the LIFX app. Matter firmware 4.100 and later uses a timed button-hold sequence that LIFX describes on a separate page; older firmware uses all buttons held for about 10 seconds until the LED flashes green.
