Matter Versions Explained: What Each Release Added, From 1.0 to 1.6.1

Every Matter release from 1.0 to 1.6.1, what the CSA says each one added, and why a new release does not mean your devices support it yet.

The short answer

Matter is published by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) as numbered releases. As of October 21, 2026, the newest version on the CSA's specifications page is Matter 1.6.1, which the CSA has not announced or described. The latest release the CSA announced is Matter 1.6, released on June 17, 2026. The CSA has not announced a "Matter 2.0".

On the CSA's certification ledger (read October 19, 2026), Matter 1.4 is the most common version among certified products: 5,025 of 12,606 certified product models have their newest certification on it, and 913 are certified on Matter 1.5 or 1.5.1. No certification on the ledger states Matter 1.6 or 1.6.1 yet. The counts are below.

Several features that have been described as coming in a "Matter 2.0" already arrived in 1.x releases: robot vacuums in Matter 1.2 (2023), EV chargers and energy reporting in Matter 1.3 (2024), solar, home batteries, heat pumps and water heaters in Matter 1.4 (2024), and cameras in Matter 1.5 (2025).

A new release is the start of the process, not the end. Device makers have to build and certify products against it, and Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and other platforms add support for new device types on their own schedules. "Matter 1.5 supports cameras" does not mean every Matter app shows every Matter camera yet.

Correction

An earlier MatterCatalog article, "Matter 2.0: Everything You Need to Know" (February 2026), said cameras, robot vacuums and energy management devices were new in an upcoming "Matter 2.0" expected in mid-2026. That was wrong. No Matter 2.0 had been announced, and those device types arrived in the 1.x releases below. Our earlier Matter 1.3 overview also listed water heaters and refrigerators as new in 1.3; they arrived in 1.4 and 1.2. We retired both articles, and their addresses now lead to this page.

"Certified models on it now" counts the product models whose newest certification on the CSA ledger states that version (ledger read October 19, 2026). Dates are the CSA's announcement dates. The CSA has not announced Matter 1.6.1, so it has no date here.

What each release added

Matter 1.0 (October 2022)

The first release covered the most common smart home devices: lighting, plugs and switches, door locks, thermostats and HVAC controllers, blinds and shades, security sensors such as door, window and motion sensors, TVs and streaming players, and bridges that bring other devices into Matter. Matter runs over Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet, and most devices use Bluetooth Low Energy during setup. The standard grew out of Project CHIP ("Connected Home over IP"), which the CSA renamed Matter in May 2021. Sources: CSA: Matter arrives and CSA: Project CHIP is now Matter.

In the CSA's words: "will support a variety of common smart home products, including lighting and electrical, HVAC controls, window coverings and shades, safety and security sensors, door locks, media devices including TVs, controllers as both devices and applications, and bridges." (CSA: Matter 1.0, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.1 (May 2023)

A maintenance release; the CSA's announcement names no new device types. Its main change improved support for intermittently connected devices: the battery-powered sensors, locks and switches that sleep most of the time. They can sleep longer and are less likely to show as offline. Source: CSA: Matter 1.1.

In the CSA's words: "Matter 1.1 enhances support for a category of devices that apply to many smart home products — Intermittently Connected Devices (ICDs)." "The additional support reduces the likelihood that a device will be reported as offline when users or platforms interact with it." (CSA: Matter 1.1, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.2 (October 2023)

Added nine device types: refrigerators, room air conditioners, dishwashers, laundry washers, robotic vacuums, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, air quality sensors, air purifiers and fans. The robot vacuum type covers starting a clean, cleaning modes such as vacuuming or mopping, and status details such as charging and errors. Source: CSA: Matter 1.2.

In the CSA's words: "Robotic Vacuums – Beyond the basic features like remote start and progress notifications, there is support for key features like cleaning modes (dry vacuum vs wet mopping)" "Fans – Matter 1.2 includes support for fans as a separate, certifiable device type." (CSA: Matter 1.2, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.3 (May 2024)

Let any device type report energy: instantaneous power, voltage and current, and the energy used or generated over time. It added EV charging equipment, with start and stop, charging rate and a target range by a departure time; water management devices (valves, leak and freeze detectors, rain sensors); and microwave ovens, ovens, cooktops, extractor hoods and laundry dryers. Scenes also became part of the specification. Source: CSA: Matter 1.3.

In the CSA's words: "This enables any device type to include the ability to report actual and estimated measurements, including instantaneous power, voltage, current, and others, in real-time, as well as its energy consumption or generation over time." (CSA: Matter 1.3, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.4 (November 2024)

Focused on home energy: solar inverters and panel arrays, home batteries, heat pumps and electric water heaters, and device energy management, which lets an appliance shift when it runs based on forecasts. EV chargers gained charging preferences, and thermostats gained schedules and presets. The release also added certified home routers and access points that combine a Wi-Fi access point and a Thread border router and share Thread credentials, two device types for in-wall switches that power wired loads, Enhanced Multi-Admin to make adding one device to several ecosystems simpler, and a Long Idle Time mode for longer sensor battery life. Source: CSA: Matter 1.4.

In the CSA's words: "Matter 1.4 expands its energy management capabilities by adding support for new device types like solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, and water heaters." "Matter-certified HRAP devices provide the foundational infrastructure of smart homes by combining both a Wi-Fi access point and a Thread Border Router" "Enhanced Multi-Admin makes smart home management easier with single user consent, enabling existing and new devices to connect to multiple ecosystems automatically." (CSA: Matter 1.4, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 (2025)

Matter 1.4.1 (May 2025) targeted setup: one QR code for a multipack, setup details stored in an NFC tag for products whose QR code is hard to reach once installed, and an Enhanced Setup Flow that shows a maker's terms inside the platform's own app. Matter 1.4.2 (August 2025) added setup over Wi-Fi alone for products without Bluetooth, security features such as certificate revocation, certifiable scenes, standard robot vacuum behaviors, and a requirement that the Thread border routers in certified routers and access points support at least 150 devices. Sources: CSA: Matter 1.4.1 and CSA: Matter 1.4.2.

In the CSA's words: "three new features – Enhanced Setup Flow (ESF), Multi-Device Setup QR code, and Onboarding Info in NFC Tag" (CSA: Matter 1.4.1, read October 20, 2026.)

In the CSA's words: "Matter 1.4.2 introduces support for Wi-Fi-only commissioning using Wi-Fi Unsynchronized Service Discovery (USD)." "Thread Border Routers included in NIMs must support at least 150 devices" (CSA: Matter 1.4.2, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.5 (November 2025)

Added cameras, with live video and two-way audio streamed over WebRTC for local and remote viewing; a redesigned closures model that covers shades, drapes, awnings, gates and garage doors; soil sensors; and energy tariff information, so devices can exchange electricity prices and grid carbon intensity. Source: CSA: Matter 1.5.

In the CSA's words: "including support for cameras, closures, soil sensors, and new energy management capabilities." "Matter cameras support live video and audio streaming using established WebRTC technology, enabling two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols." (CSA: Matter 1.5, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.5.1 (March 2026)

A camera-focused update: several video streams from one camera at once, HEIC snapshots, better pan-tilt-zoom handling, and fixes for doorbells, chimes and intercoms. Source: CSA: Matter 1.5.1.

In the CSA's words: "Matter 1.5 introduced support for cameras and video doorbells" "support for multi-stream video and audio delivery." (CSA: Matter 1.5.1, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.6 (June 2026)

Added no new device categories. Setup can now run entirely over NFC, so a bulb or in-wall switch can be added before it is installed. Joint Fabric lets several controllers that you authorize share one Matter network instead of each keeping its own. Platforms can send a thermostat time-limited suggestions instead of direct commands, security sensors can report event history, and smoke and CO alarms can report when they have been taken down from where they were installed. Source: CSA: Matter 1.6.

In the CSA's words: "Rather than expanding into new device categories, this release enhances device setup" "Joint Fabric allows multiple user-authorized controllers to co-administer a single shared Matter network." (CSA: Matter 1.6, read October 20, 2026.)

Matter 1.6.1 (no CSA announcement)

The CSA's specifications page lists Matter 1.6.1 above Matter 1.6, with four documents: the Core, Application Clusters, Device Type Library and Standard Name Space specifications. The CSA has not announced it: as of October 21, 2026, its newsroom has no announcement for Matter 1.6.1, and a search of the CSA's website finds "1.6.1" only on that specifications page. So we give it no release date, and we don't list what it changed, because the CSA has not said. No certification on the CSA ledger states Matter 1.6.1 yet (ledger read October 19, 2026). Source: CSA: Specification Downloads.

On the CSA's specifications page: "Matter 1.6.1 Core Specification" "Matter 1.6.1 Application Clusters Specification" "Matter 1.6.1 Device Type Library Specification" "Matter 1.6.1 Standard Name Space Specification" (CSA: Specification Downloads, read October 21, 2026.)

How many certified devices use each Matter version

Most certified products today are on Matter 1.4 or later: 6,763 of the 12,606 certified product models on the CSA ledger (54%) have their newest certification on Matter 1.4, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.5 or 1.5.1. Matter 1.4 alone has 5,025. The newest version any certification states is Matter 1.5.1.

On the CSA ledger (read October 19, 2026: 15,041 certifications of 12,615 product models; a model is one vendor ID and product ID, and each certified firmware version is one certification):

9 certifications state no version; they are left out of the version counts. A model certified again on a newer version counts once, under its newest version, in the third column.

How this count relates to our statistics page. When we read the ledger on October 19, 2026, it held 15,068 compliance records, the total our Matter statistics page shows. Of them, 27 are software-component certifications (program type “softwareComponent”, which the ledger’s documentation lists next to “endProduct” and “compliantPlatform”); this page leaves those out, so it counts 15,041 certifications.

In our catalog: 1,864 products we list show a CSA certificate whose ledger record states a version, 868 of them sold in the US. Each counts under the version of the certificate its product page shows; a newer firmware certification of the same product is not counted.

How we read the version. Each certification on the ledger has a specificationVersion field. The ledger's own documentation says it "matches the SpecificationVersion attribute in the Basic Information Cluster of a device running the software certified by this DeviceModel record." and gives the example: "For example, for 1.4.2.0 version this field should contain 0x01040200." (CSA Distributed Compliance Ledger documentation: compliance fields, read October 20, 2026). Another field, cDVersionNumber, is not a Matter version: it is the "CD Version Number of the certification".

Which devices support Matter 1.4 or later?

A device supports the Matter version its certified firmware was certified on. Of the 868 US-sold products we list with a versioned CSA certificate, 299 are certified on Matter 1.4 or later (1.4, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.5 or 1.5.1). Across the whole CSA ledger, 6,763 product models are.

The version tells you which Matter features a certification can cover, not how good a product is. A product certified under an older release gains newer features only if its maker ships a firmware update for them. To check a product, open its page here (the certificate is in the Matter certification section) or look up the certificate in the CSA certified product database.

Matter cameras

Yes. Matter 1.5 added cameras: "Matter cameras support live video and audio streaming using established WebRTC technology, enabling two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols." (CSA: Matter 1.5, read October 20, 2026). As of the ledger read of October 19, 2026, 42 certificates from 6 companies have a camera as their device type (in the ledger's model record or the CSA's product listing), the first certified on March 19, 2026.

Cameras and doorbells with another kind of Matter certificate: SwitchBot Video Doorbell Monitor (certificate CSA255A1MAT46323-24; the CSA lists its device type as bridge (aggregator)); Aqara Camera Hub G350 (certificate CSA25B68MAT47802-00; the CSA lists its device type as bridge (aggregator)); APICAL indoor camera (certificate CSA2464DMAT44288-50; the CSA lists its device type as bridge (aggregator)); APICAL Outdoor Camera (certificate CSA25F68MAT48826-50; the CSA lists its device type as bridge (aggregator)); Aqara Camera Hub (certificate CSA2442EMAT43745-00; the CSA lists its device type as bridge (aggregator)). Their Matter certificate is for that device type, not for a camera.

A Matter camera also needs a platform that supports Matter cameras before its video shows in that platform's app. Google Home Help puts it this way: "All Matter-certified smart home platforms and apps update to support different Matter-enabled device types and categories at different times." (Google Home Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter)

Device types added since Matter 1.2 and how many are certified

New device types take time to reach products. Robot vacuums (424 certified models) and fans (730) arrived in Matter 1.2; cameras, added in Matter 1.5, have 42 so far, the first certified on March 19, 2026.

A model counts under a device type when the ledger's model record, or the CSA's product listing for one of its certificates, gives that as its main device type (ledger read October 19, 2026). Device types with no model found that way are not shown. "Products we list" counts listed products whose certificate's CSA product page gives that device type.

What a new release means for what you buy

Three things have to line up before a feature works in your home:

  1. The device. The maker has to build the feature and certify the product. A device certified under an older release gains new features only if the maker ships a firmware update for them.
  2. Your platform. Each platform supports its own subset of device types. Amazon, for example, says its Matter-compatible Echo devices use the Matter 1.5 SDK and support "a subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types" (Amazon developer documentation). Frequently asked questions

What is the latest Matter version?

Matter 1.6.1, which the CSA's specifications page lists above Matter 1.6 (as of October 21, 2026). The CSA has not announced Matter 1.6.1 or said what it changed, so it has no release date. The latest release the CSA announced is Matter 1.6, released on June 17, 2026. Before it came Matter 1.5.1 (March 31, 2026) and Matter 1.5 (November 20, 2025). As of October 19, 2026, no certification on the CSA ledger states Matter 1.6 or 1.6.1 yet; the newest version certified products state is Matter 1.5.1.

What is new in Matter 1.4?

Matter 1.4 (November 7, 2024) added energy device types the CSA lists as solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and water heaters; certifiable home routers and access points that combine a Wi-Fi access point and a Thread border router; Enhanced Multi-Admin, which connects a device to several ecosystems with one consent; two device types for in-wall load controls; thermostat schedules and presets; and longer battery life for sleepy devices.

What is new in Matter 1.5?

Matter 1.5 (November 20, 2025) added cameras with live video and two-way audio over WebRTC, a new closures model covering shades, drapes, awnings, gates and garage doors, soil sensors, and energy tariff and grid carbon information. Matter 1.5.1 (March 31, 2026) improved camera streaming and refined doorbell, chime and intercom device types.

Which devices support Matter 1.4?

A device supports the Matter version its firmware was certified on. On the CSA ledger (read October 19, 2026), 6,763 of 12,606 certified product models are certified on Matter 1.4 or later. Of the US-sold products we list, 299 are, 17 of them on Matter 1.5 or 1.5.1; this page lists them by category, with their certificate IDs.

Are there Matter cameras?

Yes. Matter 1.5 added cameras, and the first certificates for camera device types are on the CSA ledger: 42 as of October 19, 2026, from 6 companies. A Matter camera shows video in a platform's app only once that platform supports Matter cameras.

How do I check which Matter version a device is certified on?

Find its certificate ID on its MatterCatalog product page or in the CSA certified product database. Each certification on the CSA ledger states the Matter specification version of the firmware it certifies; this page counts products by that field.
